The domain is the name that identifies a website. This has to be unique on the Internet. A single web server can serve multiple web pages of multiple domains, but a domain can only point to one server.

A domain is usually composed of three parts. Let us take an example in order to understand each part of the domain. For eg:  in www.example.com, the three double (www), the name of the organization and the type of organization (.com) are the three parts of the domain that we were talking about.

The most common types of organizations are .COM, .NET, .MIL, and .ORG, which refer to commercial, network, military, and organization (originally non-profit, although now anyone can register a .org domain), and in the case of Chile operates the .cl that determine national pages.

Since the Internet is based on IP addresses, that is a series of numbers associated with a device and not with domain names. Each web server requires a domain name server (DNS), that is, it requires a system to assign Names to computers and network services, this is used to translate the names of the domains to IP addresses. Each domain has a primary and a secondary domain name server.
