X is working on a new ID verification feature that requires users to upload a copy of their government-issued ID and a selfie.

X already offers verified status to anyone paying for an X Premium subscription, but it doesn’t conduct its own identity checks.

Impersonation and scamming have been rampant on X, especially by crypto scammers who use the verified badge to lure victims.

The feature was first spotted by app researcher Nima Owji, who saw an “ID verified” badge on Musk’s profile earlier this month.
