Science is a universal subject in which the facts and procedures remain the same across the globe. However, it could be taught in different ways. The major difference one holds between the earlier and modern times concerning science is the advancements. Much more than a subject, it has become an integral part of our lives, especially our educational system.
On the other hand, teaching is an art that involves instructions, facilitation, and delivering particular technical skills to students.
In today’s day and age, teaching seems to be much easier. Let’s look at the different categories of teaching and how they are
Teaching is generally categorized differentiated from one another into the following two types:
CONVENTIONAL TEACHING – This is the old-school, traditional methods of teaching mainly limited to classroom lectures.
FACILITATIVE TEACHING – It contains a lot of factors that involve the use and utilization of technology, such as a projector.
1. REAL LIFE SCENARIOS:
Science is all about our daily life for it is about all the work that we do or come across in our routine processes. Previously, teaching science remained limited to the book. Now, the advancement in teaching has increased the potential of the students and boosted their ability of critical thinking.
This form of teaching, therefore, has a greater impact and means, such as the use of a projector. The audio-visual experience has helped link linking science with real-life scenarios and delivered a better understanding of the subject.
2. PROJECT-BASED LEARNING
Project-based learning is one of the new methods introduced in teaching that has made it easier to teach. It involves the cognitive skills of the students and allows room for critical thinking. This enables them to practically execute their learning. This approach specifically gained attention in recent times following the analysis of its successful assessments.
This method provides the students with enough confidence and time to investigate and respond to an authentic and engaging question or a challenge, enabling them to turn that into an opportunity. It also involves a dynamic class approach with all the possible access to technology, specifically projectors, and smartboards.
3. ACTIVITY BASED LEARNING
Activity-based learning is another new method we have in teaching nowadays that has helped academicians to excel. The method is a subset of experiential learning in which students are classified according to their age groups so that they can perform certain activities for learning purposes. One of the most important activities involved in initiating the learning process is brainstorming ideas as this provides students with great comfort and confidence to express their opinion and thoughts on a particular topic.
One of the basic skills that this method emphasizes is self-learning where the students have the opportunity to explore the subject and realize their potential through the facilitation by the teacher.
Activity-based learning also has a psychological impact on the learning of the students, as it increases their skill and will towards science and practical occurrences in the world. It helps them to use their capacity to ask questions and understand the things around the globe. It also defines their ability to a goal-oriented approach, where they are compatible enough to plan their tasks for themselves.
4. PEER TO PEER LEARNING
This method is considered an important aspect of the mainstream educational framework. It is more of an educational practice than a teaching method as it helps in the assessment during the teaching.
This type of learning or process can be used both for a beginner activity and in the assessment of the students. Peer to peer learning involves a pair of peers responsible enough to brainstorm on or assess ideas. In short, this method is the rise of experiential learning because it involves the input of two or more people with different sets of experiences, opinions, and views, resulting in a coordinative and combined result.
5. RESEARCH-BASED TEACHING
Research-based learning or teaching holds an important part of the new methods, specifically in teaching science. It tends to be one of the subjects that require intense and timely research for the advancements happening globally.
It involves independent research carried out by students on a particular topic after its brief overview by the facilitator. Most of the time, in such types of teaching methods, there is no predetermined outcome as it depends upon the individual’s skill to research specific topics in respective capacity.
The method also includes the implementation of organizational and teamwork skills when it is at the stage of cumulative outcome to be presented.
6. DISCUSSION BASED TEACHING:
This method adds the element of discussion and brainstorming along with the traditional way of teaching i.e. delivering a lecture. This type of strategy also helps to establish a bond of understanding between the students and the teachers.
It is begun by determining the student’s knowledge of the topic through either brainstorming or a question and answers session, followed by a lecture. After the lecture, a whole level of discussion takes place for understanding and assessment purposes. It is one of the most used methods to teach science, and has more benefits as compared to others, as follows:
- It helps to establish a democratic environment in the class by providing equal opportunity for every student to express their views.
- It also helps the students to practice their skills of communication through discussion.
- The role of a teacher becomes that of a facilitator by providing the students the opportunity to express more and more about themselves.
- The knowledge acquired through this method is a form of long-term gain as it involves activities and interaction as opposed to the conventional classroom approach.
- It helps to develop a sense of scientific behavior between peers.
- The method helps students become responsible enough through problem-solving concerning the given topics.
Teaching science through new methods involves the access and use of technology. Projectors being one of the easily available products of the technology enables the teachers to practice all new methods mentioned above for a better understanding of the subject. Science requires more and more involvement of technology due to the modifications and research taking place across the globe.
